10-12 Bear Street, London, WC2H 7AX
Situated in Leicester square, within easy walking distance of the Garrick and opposite the Wyndham theatre, this traditional British Pub (part of the Nicholson collection) dates from 1878 and claims Charlie Chaplin as one of its patrons.
For people just wishing to have a drink there is a spacious bar, complete with sports screens downstairs.
The small “Charlie Chaplin” restaurant is situated upstairs and maintains the unique pub feel.
The Nicholson Group are well known for their traditional cask ales and gin palaces. There is an extensive drinks menu of both original ales and gins with recommended tonics. There is a smaller wine menu with the price of a bottle of wine commencing from £19.99.
The Bear and Staff did not offer a pre-theatre menu, however there are several “meal deal” menus available that offer good value for money.
Lunch meal deal menus start from £8.25, Dinner meal deal menus start from £10.75 both include a drink and are available Monday to Friday.
The Bear and Staff house speciality dishes are sausages and there is an extensive selection on the menu.
Main plates start from £9.95 ranging up to £14.95.
The traditional steak and ale pie was deep filled and came accompanied with mash potatoes and mixed vegetables. Portions are very generous and neither of us could clear our plates.
Service is good, food was hot and attractively presented, and staff are knowledgable about the dishes and products used.
This pub is very popular with tourists and gets very busy pre-theatre, so booking is essential to ensure a table. I would also advise to allow yourselves time due to the number of customers. Our table was booked for 17:15 p.m. and we left the restaurant at 18:45 p.m.
I would recommend The Bear and Staff for anyone who likes pub food served in a traditional setting.
